About the Author
Tom Radzienda has lectured in poetry, culture and journalism in the Faculty of Humanities at Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) in Bangkok since 1994. He first began writing poetry in 1979 while in secondary school. His creative pursuits simmered for a decade while working as a technician and manager for a manufacturing firm. He resigned in 1991 to pursue his Master of Arts degree at the University of Sussex in England.
Tom has travelled widely in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. His travels are a major inspiration and provide a wide variety of social, natural and historical images in his poetry.
His most recent poetry collection, A Promise for Siam, reflects his observations and experiences in Thailand since settling in Bangkok in 1992. This book has been the foundation for a series of recitals/poetry discussions presented at The Siam Society, Chulalongkorn University and various other locations in Bangkok. A Promise for Siam is available in bookstores throughout Thailand, or from http://161.200.139.232/cgi-bin/main/description_eng.asp?barcode=9789748860831
Tom has presented several poetry recitals and photography exhibitions in Thailand. His 2002 charity exhibition, A Promise for Siam, based on his book of the same name, is raising money for children at Bahn Khru Noi Children’s Home in Bangkok. This ongoing volunteer project brings poetry students from SWU to visit, teach, and play with children at Bahn Khru Noi.
His 1999 charity project, African Rhythms, presented poetry and photography from East Africa to raise money for Iluya Primary School in Kenya. This project is providing textbooks to the school for all subjects for grades 1 to 8.
Tom’s poetry has been published in various Thai, British and American magazines. His first collection of poems, No More Pretty Pictures (1998) is available from http://www.dcothai.com/books/tom_radzienda.htm
His poetry-writing column, Poet Tree, appears in the Bangkok Post on alternate Tuesdays or at http://www.bangkokpost.com/education/site2003/ptsum03.htm
